The Chromium Web

What’s this?  A technological advancement?  Google’s new open source browser named “Chrome” is available starting out as an executable for Windows, but reviews are saying that it shows innovation as well as advances in speed, specifically in the area of Javascript execution, due to the V8 Javascript engine, and the incorporation of WebKit into it’s construction.  Google creatively introduced Google Chrome with a detailed webcomic created by Scott McCloud explaining Chrome’s technical innovations as well as Google’s rationale and motivation behind a browser.  What about plugins?  Well, Chrome Plugins are in the works.

Google’s willingness to contribute is admirable.  This push however begs the question; why ignore Firefox?  With the recent head Mozilla is coming to with EULA’s I would hope that it’s about freedom.  Freedom to innovate and start with something new and fresh, rather than just improve upon the old.   Google originally had a little trouble of their own with a EULA copy-and-paste job, that didn’t quite fit a browser’s need for privacy.

A cleaner and simpler browser was possible, and has been delivered.  Will it arrive in that form when/if it comes to Linux?  ( I don’t count the stick-on approach)  Will it detract from a great movement that is sweeping the web, that is Firefox?  These questions and more will determine the direction of the web itself.
